Indian National Science Day 28 FEBRUARY

February 28, is Science Day. On that day in 1928, Sir C.V. Raman announced the discovery of the Raman Effect. For this, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1930. The Raman Effect led to the growth of a new discipline, Raman Spectroscopy, which has now become a powerful tool for a wide range of scientific investigations and industrial applications.

Raman was a genius. He finished school education at the age of 11 and graduated in Physics and English from the University of Madras four years later. At 17, he did his Master’s in Physics. Thereafter, he joined the Indian Audit and Accounts Service and was posted at Kolkata. But his love for Physics continued.

In 1915, he was appointed Palit Professor of Physics in the Science College of Calcutta University. In 1933, he moved to Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, as its Director. After Independence, the Government of India appointed him the first National Professor.

Raman was a compulsive and relentless investigator. He never stopped learning and doing research. After his retirement in 1948, he established Raman Research Institute at Bangalore and continued to work there till his death on November 7, 1970.

Raman was a die-hard nationalist. He never believed that good quality research could be carried out only with foreign-made instruments. He emphasised on self-reliance in science and technology. Raman also represents an era when the facilities for education and research were very limited. Yet a large number of scientists did research work of international level. Some of them were J.C. Bose, S.N. Bose, Meghnad Saha, Homi Bhabha, P. C. Ray and Birbal Sahni. It is now being acknowledged that J. C. Bose invented wireless, not Marconi.

A story.

Once in a village, three women were going to take water from a lake. Three of them were neighbors and they were friendly too. Lake was the only water source for villagers. While walking towards the lake they were talking to each other casually. Then one of them said her son is very intelligent and really hard working in his academic level, he is top in his studies. The other second one said her son is a good athlete, he is more desired towards sports and he has won many tournaments and medals. Two of the ladies were very proud of their sons. And the third women said nothing serious about her son. She said he is not that good in studies or athletics. At that time they had already reached near lake. They took water in huge water jugs and placed on their head and started to walk back home.  While returning to home one of the lady’s son came towards them on the way, he was very happy, because he got higher grade in his academic exams. So he was exceptionally cheerful to share his happiness to his mother and other two ladies and he returned. Then few minutes later the other lady’s son came on the way and he was also really happy because he won an athletic competition if first place, he exhibited his award and shared his happiness with them and went away. Then the last lady’s son came through that way and when he saw his mother, he ran to his mother, he took large water jug from his mother’s head and supported it on his head. And they together walked towards home happily. Other two ladies were wondered seeing his love to his mother and realized love is more valuable than academic or any other values.

Be kind to animals, it may erase our sins.

It’s a story, not sure who told this, but I felt really touching when I heard this story. So I thought I should share it with you all. Story starts like this, once a countess was traveling through a desert with her camels, donkeys, servants and securities who were escorting her. She was very unkind, wicked, disloyal and rich lady who won’t hesitate to do whatever thing to increase her wealth. She treated her servants like slaves and she had no kindness to anyone. So God decided to punish her for her sins. He send a sand storm, she and her crew was hit by that heavy sand storm. She lost her escorts and her servant men and became alone in desert. She was feeling terribly tired and thirst for water. But she find water nowhere in that vast desert. She walked through unsteady stand looking for help. After a long walk in that burning sun light she saw a well  and a cactus far away. She rush to that well looking for water,  she reached beside the well and looked inside it for water, she saw water contained by that well was really deep down and there was nothing to take water from that depth. She was helpless and she needed water at any cost, so she climbed down to the depth of that well and drank enough water she needed. Then she started to climb back up and in half way she felt she was dragged back down by someone, because of her drenched cloths. She struggled a lot and reached on top and stepped on sand. On that moment a dog came to her, he was tired and thirsty. He was trying to drink the water dripping from her drenched clothes. The lady tried to intimidate him to make him go away from her. But the dog was really needed water and he was trying to catch dripping drops from her clothes and he didn’t get any. After few minutes the lady felt mercy on him, she memorized how thirsty was she few moments ago. Then she understood how badly that dog needs water, and then she climbed deep down in the well, holding her shoe with her teeth, biting. She reached down and took water in her shoe and again climbed up back holding her shoe with her teeth. She gave water to dog and made him feel better.

Story ends here, but God says “because of her kindness to that dog, I have changed my decision to punish her and forgave all her sins she had done in her life.

Do not miss a chance to show kindness to other species. Who knows it may be our chance to receive God’s Mercy.

World Radio Day..

Today 12th of February 2012, UNESCO celebrates World Radio Day.

The World Radio Day seeks out to increase awareness about the significance of radio, facilitate access to information through radio and improve networking between broadcasters. Radio has to be recognized as a low cost medium, specifically suited to reach remote communities and vulnerable people: the illiterate, the disabled, women, youth and the poor, while offering a platform to intervene in the public debate, irrespective of people’s educational level. Furthermore, radio has a strong and specific role in emergency communication and disaster relief. There is also a changing face to radio services which, in the present times of media convergence, are taking up new technological forms, such as broadband, mobiles and tablets. However, it is said that up to a billion people still do not have access to radio today.

On November 3, 2011, the 36th General Conference of UNESCO approved the creation of the World Day of Radio. The initial idea came from the Spanish Academy of Radio four years ago, therefore, the Permanent Delegation of Spain to UNESCO formally present the proposal at the session 187 of UNESCO's Executive Board in September 2011.
